Home schooling has its pluses and minuses

Friday, October 6, 2006 9:20 AM EDT

Each Friday, The Citizen features someone in education from the Finger Lakes community in The Banks:
This week, we spotlight Sarah Del Favero who is home schooled.

Q. What is most rewarding about being home-schooled to you?

A. Public schoolers get home from school, have homework to do and then only have a few hours left before the day ends. If you add a job to that, things can get even more crazy. I have a lot more time to relax and not be so rushed.

Q. What has been the most challenging?

A. Either getting along with my siblings for the whole day or not being able to participate in musicals or other after-school activities.

Q. How is your school day structured? Are there set times for each subject?

A. My mom prints up a schedule that tells me what pages or lessons to do for each subject. I don't have to do them in a certain order, but I do have to spend a certain amount of time on each subject.

Q. What is the biggest misconception you hear regarding students who are home-schooled? Why do you believe others think this?

A. Most people think that home-schoolers don't get enough of a social life, but for me, that isn't true. I go to a dance class at AJ Smith Elementary School every week; I've had a swimming class on the weekend for the past eight years, and I go to church. I believe others think this because of second-hand information or hearsay as opposed to personally talking with a home-schooler.

Q. What is the part of your day you could do without?

A. The time of day where I have to do my science class!

Q. When you grow up, what would you like to be?

A. Right now, I want to be an actress on Broadway or something close to it. That could change, though.

Q. If you could star in any Broadway show, which would you pick? Why?

A. I think I would want to be in “Peter Pan.” I've seen the movies, and I think it would be a very fun show to do.

Q. What is your favorite educational TV show? What is it and why?

A. Actually, I don't watch very many educational shows. I do like to watch “Dancing with the Stars” and “Lost,” though.
