Each Friday, The Citizen features someone in education from the Finger Lakes community in The Banks:
This week, we spotlight Pride of Genesee Elementary School.
Q. How long have you been Genesee's mascot?
A. Monday, Sept. 11 was my first day on the job, and I was more than a little nervous - more than 400 children and 50 adults waited for me to make my entrance into the gym.
Q. What did you do on your first day?
A. Mr. Seamans, Genesee's principal, introduced me to the staff and students. He let them know that each letter of my name stands for a characteristic that Genesee students are going to try their best to exemplify this year. The “P” means “prepared” - they will come to school with their backpacks and everything in them that they need, in order to be successful each day. The next letter, “R,” stands for responsible - no overdue library books or lost papers! For “I,” Genesee students will be “in control” - of both their behaviors and their emotions. Genesee students are hard workers, so it is fitting that the “D” stands for “determined.” Lastly, the letter “E” represents “enthusiasm” - I could tell they had a good supply of that by the cheer they greeted me with when I walked into the gym!
Q. Why did you choose this profession?
A. I think that encouraging children to be good citizens is very important, as well as very rewarding.
Q. What is the most enjoyable part of your job?
A. High-fiving the kids.
Q. What is the most difficult part of your job?
A. My eyesight isn't the best, and I tend to walk into things.
Q. What is the most exciting thing that's happened to you at Genesee?
A. Well, I haven't been here too long, but I did find out that students in Mrs. Gilmore's third grade class have become penpals with a third grade class in Arlington, Texas. They're going to be exchanging school mascots! “Lil Tex,” the Texas school's armadillo mascot, arrived last week, and I thought I would be heading off to Texas soon. However, the students would miss me too much, so they're sending a stuffed animal that looks like me instead.
Q. People would be surprised to learn that I ____?
A. Coach softball when I'm not at Genesee.
Q. If you weren't Genesee's mascot, what would you be doing?
A. I would be hanging out with Abner at the Doubledays games.
Q. What is your favorite quote?
A. “Our character is what we do when we think no one is looking,” by H. Brown.
