After about a five-year hiatus, the Sherwood Inn is bringing Oktoberfest back to Skaneateles.
Because central New York weather can be unpredictable, scheduling an adequate weekend to hold the event had become a problem and Oktoberfest was put on hold, said Sherwood Inn's director of sales and marketing Rita Trenti.
“We moved the date up, and it'll help kick off SAVES Come to the Rescue campaign,” Trenti said.
In the past, Oktoberfest was strictly a German-themed celebration. Though traditional German fare and entertainment will still be a large part of the day, the Inn has teamed with Beak and Skiff to provide apple wine and hard cider tastings, as well as with local merchants like Riddler's who will provide some of the giveaways for visitors.
Brugemeiser, or master of ceremonies, Klaus Raith will keep the festivities rolling, and the German band Die Musikanten and Enzian Bavarian Dancers will provide ongoing entertainment - unlike past festivals when Trenti said only one band would play, taking frequent breaks.
“It'll add a lot of entertainment. They'll be in costume and it's authentic,” Trenti said.
Trenti said reviving Oktoberfest seemed like the perfect event to celebrate the fall season in a way that benefits the whole community.
“It's the perfect partnering,” Trenti said. “(Merchants) are helping us with donations, and we are helping them by making it a village-wide event ... the master of ceremonies will be mentioning that the merchants are open.”
Being that October is typically the month SAVES starts its Come to the Rescue fundraiser, Trenti said Oktoberfest seemed like a good way to kick it off and make the whole community aware of their needs.
“Come to the Rescue is (SAVES') operational fundraiser, and everyone's been great about the building fundraiser,” she said. “But they also need to stay in business until they move, so this is a way to say, ‘Don't forget they need gasoline and other supplies to operate.'”
Trenti said a cruise on an antique wooden boat will also offer the opportunity to enjoy the lake and see the fall foliage. With a capacity of eight, they are hoping for the boat to depart with new passengers approximately every half hour.
