HIT: To NUCOR Steel, for stepping up to make the construction of a Millard Fillmore historical building a reality.
Nucor Auburn plant general manager Dave Smith made the commitment to the Cayuga-Owasco Lakes Historical Society, which has longed for a permanent structure in Moravia to house Fillmore artifacts. Coupled with NUCOR's incredibly generous donation to the Cayuga County United Way chapter, it's clear this company is a leader when it comes to community service.
HIT: To the Zero Gravity 5 International Break Dancing Competition, which came to Auburn for its annual contest in the United States over the weekend (it also has one each year in France).
The New York Institute of Dance and Education hosted the event, which provided a wonderful display of talent and determination. Some of the best break dancers from around the world came to Auburn to showcase their skills and compete for prize money.
Not only do events like these bring dozens of visitors to the area to spend money at local businesses, but they also offer residents here a unique entertainment experience.
MISS: To the heavy volume of television advertisements being purchased by Republican and Democratic national committees in connection with local congressional races.
These ads, which aren't approved by the candidates, have been overwhelmingly negative and often come across as petty, even childish. We understand the committees have heavy interest in these races, and that's terrific. But we ask that they use their campaign war chests more effectively.
HIT: To the opening of the Montezuma Wildlife Complex visitor center in the town of Savannah.
This impressive facility, which has been in the works for years, officially opened Monday with a ceremony involving state and local officials. The continued commitment to the Montezuma wetlands area that includes Cayuga, Seneca and Wayne counties is a blessing for this region.
