Auburn district using tax money for pie in the sky

By now I am sure everyone received their school tax bill in the mail, and I am just as sure everyone received the little booklet in the mail from the school district in an attempt to persuade the taxpayers to pass the referendums on Oct. 17. However, I would appreciate an opportunity to make a few observations concerning these issues.

Monday, September 25, 2006 9:24 AM EDT

First and foremost, the district moved the referendum from November to October. The reasoning they gave was laughable. They are aware that the majority of voters will be out enmasse in November; thus, as a way to maneuver around this issue, they move the date to October.
Secondly, they only allow the public to vote in one school, Seward. They also are aware that there are some voters who will not leave their homes and drive across town to vote for or against a school referendum. Thus, another maneuver designed to ensure a victory for Mike Stearns and John Plume.

Next is the booklet itself. In this explanation booklet, it goes into some detail about what is being requested. However, it does not tell you the whole story. It never mentions that the district is planning to build a half-million dollar concession stand at the high school.

It does not tell you about the press box they want to build; a press box that costs what a house would cost. It does not tell you about the lights and the $40,000-plus price tag for aiming these lights. There are a multitude of problems with these referendums. You are not being told the whole story.

I want everyone to be aware of these issues and I am asking your support in voting against these referendums. This district is using your money for the pie in the sky.

I personally think spending $500,000 on a concession stand with bathrooms is a blatant misuse of public money and places an unnecessary burden on the already over-burdened taxpayers.

Vote no on Oct. 17 at Seward Elementary School.

" Seems to me that Jerry ought to get his facts straight, I have not seen any information that eludes to a $500,000 concession stand. Where did this come from Jerry? You should check your sources, sounds like you are either getting bad information or are not understanding the information. Could it be you need to do some homework? Secondly, Sounds like you are the one who wishes to "persuade" the vote by pushing it to November where a fair amount of the voters would be inelligible to vote and by default the vote would be disregarded. That is really looking out for the student. Good plan Jerry....NOT! "

" My God you sound exactly like Mike Stearns there (Auburn NY!) The problem still exists that the costs associated with the items this board has grouped together with the repairs is way out of line. Bring them back and allow the public to vote on the roof seperate from the turf and the $500,000 concession stand. Furthermore, allowing the public the right to vote is very important, just as allowing them the right to vote without putting up road blocks in front of them. Every school should be open to accomodate the public on issues the board feels is important enough for their vote. You can not justify anything less than that! And anything less than that are tactics usded by Nazis and or Communists, so which one are you? "

" The vast majority -- 85% -- of the cost of the capital improvements is coming from state money. Money that cannot be spent on teachers, or to combat the drop out rate, money that will go to another district if we don't use it. So pitting the capital improvements against the drop out rate is useless. Maybe improvements to the athletic infrastructure will keep some borderline kids in school long enough to graduate. I'm willing to spend 12 cents a month (yes that's all it will be for a house that's valued at $100,000) to improve our school buildings and athletic fields. And I don't think it's an issue that only one school is open for voting. How many voters do you think would be walking to the polls, very few if any. If they have to drive to their local school, what's the big deal about driving a max of 5 more minutes to get to Seward School. Maybe the district was looking at saving some money by not having polling places at lots of different schools. "

" Forget the turf. My child doesn't even have a textbook for Math class because there is not enough to go around-and we are concerned with turf!!! "

" Awfully coincidental how the lights went out at the football game Friday night. I heard the concession stand lost the grill too. Wow we really should all vote yes on the referendums. We NEED the turf too. Gimme a break. Enough is enough. Quit playing with the taxpayers minds. We AIN'T stupit. "

" Spoken like a true "liberal" I find it amusing, and interesting that it does not bother you our school district is willing to pay a half a million dollars for a concession stand. How many homes could be built for that sum of money? Homes that could and would pay taxes? I also find it amusing that you are quick to label me anti school. Or anti education just because I question where and how our tax money is spent. If you knew me you would know just the opposite is true. I believe our children deserve the very best education money can buy, but I am against frivolous spending. Consider if you would the amount of money we currently pay in school taxes, even with the STAR and the pennies given back as a campaign ploy from Albany. Then consider the ability of this community to pay the ever increasing costs associated with education, and the frivolous spending built on top of the education tax bill. And what bothers me most are the tactic employed by the board of education and the school administration designed to get this referendum passed. The entire district should be open for the public to vote on these issues, after all we are talking millions of local tax dollars. Instead we are being made to criss cross the city to vote at one location, Seward School. Vote No on Oct 17th. And have a nice day "

" The voting was set in October to be able to apply for assistance dead line. Any quality concession stand is well worth the money---I ran concession for four years while my son was in the band. The profit paid for annual band trip, year end banquet, three $1000. scholarships, and I was able to pay for repair work each summer on all instruments. Any improvements on facilities is money saving issue, not an expense. You know that the cost is far less to fix than replace. The problem Mr. Morgan has is with MARKETING. Once you have the goods to offer the area, the school district fails to market these facilities properly. "

" Auburn High was there before Mr. Morgan and will be there long after. Why is he on this one man crusade of anti school? Is he that short of cash? Those stubents who are willing to play revenue generating sports in Auburn should have the best facility in Central New York. There are thousands of students that played football for the Auburn Maroons. Many of those Auburnians now live elsewhere. Why? Because of the pinch a penny attitude of the Mr. Morgan's. "
