ELBRIDGE - Alan Johnson rolled to his second 358-modified Super DIRT Series victory Friday night at Rolling Wheels Raceway, while Brett Hearn made a long-awaited return to victory lane in the Advance Auto Parts DIRT series for big-blocks on Saturday, winning the rain-shortened 200-lapper to garner $10,000.
Hearn utilized an early pit stop in order to place himself back near the front of the pack after all the other competitors made their
mandatory stop. Danny Johnson set the early pace and lapped up to 18th place before the initial caution flag on lap 44. Gambling that it would rain and stall the race, Johnson remained out on the track until lap 112 before making his stop.
Hearn had supplanted Johnson into the lead some 44 laps previous, and held on to the top spot through a couple of rain delays before finally the race was deemed official on lap 155 when heavier rains set in.
Billy Decker finished second in the Gypsum wholesalers No. 91, followed by Jimmy Phelps in the Hand H Troyer Motorsports No. 98H. The third-place effort marked the third straight top-five finish for the team. Gary Tomkins was fourth, with Mr. DIRT points leader Alan Johnson maintaining his lead with a solid fifth-place effort.
Danny Johnson recovered from his late pit stop to garner sixth, trailed by defending Mr. DIRT champion Tim Fuller in seventh place. Vic Coffey's eighth-place effort was good enough to earn the Eckerd 200 qualifying spot, and Matt Sheppard and Frank Cozze completed the top 10 finishers.
Alan Johnson's Friday night win was not marred by any type of weather difficulty, as he took the lead away from Fuller on lap 44 and cruised to a $4,000 payday. Fuller held on for second place, two full seconds in back of Johnson at the checkered flag. Pete Bicknell was third, following up his Brockville triumph with a solid performance. Hearn and Jimmy Phelps completed the top five.
In other class competition, Mike Welch won the 20-lap street stock main over Scott Smith and Dave Mannise. Denis Gauvreau won the 30-lap pro stock feature over Louie Jackson and Pete Stefanski. Shawn Donath won the 30-lap sportsman event, passing Russ Hefti for the lead on lap 18. Brian Sage was third, with Billy Shantel Jr. and Sammy Reakes IV rounding out the top five finishers.
Rolling Wheels Raceway will lie idle until Friday, Oct. 6, when the 358-modifieds return for their annual 100-lap contest during SUPER DIRT Week. The 360 sprint cars take center stage Saturday night, Oct. 7, at the Wheels, for the ESS/URC Challenge.
Meanwhile, down the street at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway that very same Saturday night, the big-block and 358-modifieds square off in a unique shoot-out for one of the last qualifying spots for the Eckerd 200, run the very next day at the New York State Fairgrounds.
