Senior citizens continue to give back to community

This letter is in response to the uninformed person whose “Two Cents” said that the residents of Schwartz Towers and Boyle Center are not city taxpayers, so they do not have a right to tell the city how to spend its money.
Let me enlighten you. When taxes are raised, the increased amounts are passed on to the tenants, and that includes all tenants; those in the senior complexes along with the rest of the renters in the community.

The meeting held at Schwartz Towers on Wednesday, Sept. 13, was to explore the feasibility of combining RSVP and the Auburn Senior Citizen Club in one building.

These are two excellent organizations with completely different objectives. RSVP was moved out of Schwartz Towers a number of years ago because it had outgrown its space.

The Auburn Senior Citizens have many groups who use the Schwartz Towers rooms on a regular basis. To combine the two groups would not be fair to either.

I would also like to note that the volunteer hours donated by the RSVP organization save the community many thousands of dollars.

If there were no RSVP and the city had to pay for these services, your taxes would be even higher. Seniors are still giving back to the community.

Who pays taxes? wrote on Sep 21, 2006 2:24 PM:

" To the person that wrote in about residents of Schwartz Towers not paying taxes, anyone that rents, Standart Woods or any other apartment is in the same boat. Do you rent or own? Is this the pot calling the kettle black? "
