HIT: To the United Way of Cayuga County, which kicked off another fall fundraising campaign with an inspiring program Wednesday night.
The agency, recognized as one of the best United Way chapters in the state, has set a lofty $1.35 million goal for this year's campaign. We certainly hope they achieve it, because those dollars make an incredible difference in the community.
Anyone who was at the kickoff party saw an amazing example of this in a story of Susan Storms, a Weedsport woman who has a degenerative eye disorder that severely limits her vision. Through a variety of United Way-funded agencies, Storms has overcome her condition to live a productive and fulfilling life.
“I'm really blessed,” Storms told the audience Wednesday.
And those who were there were blessed for learning about her story.
HIT: To the EssentialConnections.org Emerging Business Competition, which will award $100,000 to an emerging small business in a 12-county region that includes Cayuga County.
For this region to grow, it needs to better foster entrepreneurship, which provides the true foundation for a strong economy. We urge Cayuga County businesses to take a shot and enter this contest, and thank the organizations - M&T Bank and New York Business Development Corp. - for sponsoring it.
MISS: Though it's a good idea to conduct an independent investigation into the handling of the Ralph “Bucky” Phillips manhunt, it was wrong for the head of the state police union to blast how the search was handled - at least for now.
Union boss Daniel De Federicis is calling for an outside probe, but he's already said the search was badly mismanaged. Wouldn't it make more sense to wait for such a review before going public with any conclusions? And wouldn't it be better to put a little more time between Phillips' capture and such inflammatory statements?
