Maroons close in on sectionals; Lotkowictz has hat trick

UTICA - The Auburn girls soccer team won their second game in as many days in a 5-1 defeat of Utica Proctor on Tuesday. The score was 1-0 at the half before the Maroons characteristically broke away in the second half.
Carrie Lawton led the Maroons with two goals and an assist, while Marissa Slayton, Melissa Hyrnick and Laura Taylor each added another goal. Taylor tallied two assists and Hyrnick, Lawton and Jordan Pelc had one. The Maroons out-shot the Raiders 24-6, which resulted in just four saves for goalie Virginia Porten.

Auburn (7-1) hosts Nottingham on Thursday.

Skaneateles 4, Cazenovia 1

Jenna Lotkowictz had a hat trick to lead the Lakers to the convincing win. Alex Hughes had the other goal while Amanda Gray had two assists.

Kelsey Bennett stepped into goal for injured Kara Buehler to record four big saves in the second half.

Skaneateles (4-2) plays next against Solvay Thursday.

GIRLS TENNIS

Auburn 6, Nottingham 1

Melissa Coughlin remained undefeated this year winning 6-1, 6-0 to lead Auburn to their fifth win of the year. Delaney Scollan won 6-3, 6-0 in second singles.

Emily Mastropietro also remained undefeated with a 6-3, 7-5 win. Sara Doan and Leeann O'Kussick won 7-5, 6-7, 7-9T, 6-4 in first doubles. Sonia Dubovici and Katie Searing won in second doubles 6-2, 6-2. Kara Mariano and Bryann Dusharm also remained undefeated with a 6-3, 6-2 win.

Auburn's next match is against Baldwinsville Thursday.

FIELD HOCKEY

Fayetteville Manlius 4, Auburn 0

Liz Vogza had four saves in goal for the Maroons.

Auburn's next game is Thursday against Baldwinville.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Groton 72, Lansing 44, Southern Springs 43, Moravia Inc., DeRuyter Inc.

Jason Phillips came in first place overall with a 18:59 but Moravia did not have enough runners to qualify for the win. Moravia's next top finishers were Joe Grobelny in fifth place with a 20:15 and Bruce Cobb with a 26:12. Evan Bassett was Southern Springs top finisher in third place with a 19:53. Sam Fessenden finished sixth with a 20:38. Roger Olschewske had a time of 21:24 finishing ninth. Tim Cuff finished 11th with a 21:55. Alex Schmidt finished 14th with a 22:14.

Moravia, 29, Southern Springs 30, Lansing Inc., Groton Inc., DeRuyter Inc.

Catherine Miller came in first place overall (22:51) for Southern Springs.

Other top finishers for Southern Springs were Mary Miller in fifth (25:56), Molly O'Hara in seventh (26:38), Lindsay Driscoll in eighth (26:43) and Meg Rindfleich finished (27:44) in ninth place.

Moravia's Alisha McLaughlin finished second (25:09), Aimee Glenister finished third (25:12) and Claire Hunsinger had a fourth place finish (25:12). Kayla Slater finished sixth (26:00) and Helen Hunsinger had a 30:11.

Moravia's improves to 4-2 on the year and go to the Auburn Invitational this weekend.

Skaneateles 18 , Cazenovia 43

Skaneateles 15, Solvay 49

Hannah Waite came in first overall (19:03) with fellow seniors Rachel Vaivoda (20:00) and Stephanie Searing (20:11) right behind her in second and fourth place respectively. Kristen Roberts finished fifth (20:20), Rachel Hosie finished sixth (20:23). Alexis Mozzeo finished eighth (20:39). Christina Homeyer finished tenth (20:52).

Tully 48, Weedsport 15

TULLY - Sarah Wignall finished first overall (20:54). Alyssa O'Bryan took ninth (23:01), Keriann Earl (23:53) placed 12th and Ashley Edmunds was 18th (24:22).

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Cazenovia 28, Skaneateles 29

Skaneateles 18, Solvay 40

Sam Smolenski was the top finisher for the Lakers with a third place finish (17:07). Freshman Calvin Davis finished fifth (17:22). Matt Parker was sixth (17:39), Dustin Plunkett was eighth (17:59). Jeff Craig finished 10th (18:06).

Skaneateles will head to the Auburn Invitational this weekend.

Tully 20, Weedsport 43

TULLY - Mike Greer placed best for the Lakers at seventh (18:03). Shaun Daly was right behind him in eighth (18:07), Jim Bos finished ninth (18:11), Ryan Enos was 12th (18:51) and John Bos took 13th (18:54).

GOLF

Auburn 197, Corcoran 222

Ryan May shot a 36 to lead Auburn in the win. Sean Hogan shot a 39, Ryan Gleason carded a 40 and C.J. Shaw, Brian Walker and Bob Duschatinski all shot 41's.

The Maroons (9-2) next match is Thursday against Nottingham.

VOLLEYBALL

Southern Cayuga 3, Newark Valley 1

Carissa Wheeler had three aces and five kills to lead Southern Cayuga to a 20-25, 25-14, 25-23, 25-16 victory. Mani Meil had an ace and four kills and Julie Hewitt had two aces, three kills and ten assists.

Southern Cayuga improves to 2-1 and plays Lansing Thursday.
