New breed of terrorist rides our local highways

Thursday, September 14, 2006 10:25 AM EDT

Bush and most Americans believe that terrorists from other countries are our only worry. Wrong! The threat from within is real and it's mind-boggling that nobody's doing anything about it.
American highways and other thoroughfares are filled with terrorists. They are careless, reckless and irresponsible and they are “Americans.” They are well-deserved of their names: Terrors on the Highway.

Behind the wheels of the vehicles they drive; they put everyone's life and limb at risk. They are the reckless drivers of society whose only care seems to be to speed, tailgate, cross over double yellow lines, run red lights, refuse to stop at stop signs, etc. It doesn't matter whether it's a work day, or non-work day, speed and reckless driving is always on their agenda.

There are thousands and thousands of dead and injured, year in and year out from cars being driven recklessly and irresponsibly. And they are called “accidents.”

Give me a break! They were “accidents” waiting to happen because one party or both weren't driving safely. Tailgating is an accident waiting to happen. If a deer runs out into the road, or a vehicle's tire goes flat, tailgating will truly take its toll, not only on all vehicles following closely, but vehicles in the other lane as well.

Speed is the name of the game for these someday soon-to-be “killers of the highway.”

Laws need to be enacted to lower the speed limit. Less or very few injuries and deaths will be the results. Tailgaters need to be more vigilantly watched by law enforcement. Every speeder needs to get a speeding ticket. Repeat offenders need to have their licenses revoked for a period of time. Everyone should be required to take safe driving courses.

Bad driving needs to become totally extinct and good driving needs to become a reality.

" The other day I was on the thruway ans watched a guy on the back bumper of a car in the passing lane ahead of me. We were going at least 15 miles over the speed imit already, so there was no need to tailgate. The person in front was going a steady speed, probably with cruise on. There was traffic being passed. While approaching to pass the next car, this tailgating jerk decided to speed around on the right lane and sqeeze back into the passing lane ahead the first car after passing it on the right illegally. There was nearly a crash as both cars in the right and left lane had to adjust for this reckless move. A few seconds later a trooper came flying out of the right side grass and stopped that car. Luckily, he saw what had happened. I and others who had witnessed this scene tooted happily as the jerk was being pulled over and all in my car were cheering. At the point when he was stopped I bet that jerk was going at least 90 too. Hope he got two tickets that day! "

" I agree with Paul. Reducing the speed limit is ridiculous. The speeders are breaking the speed limit so how would reducing the speed limit have any impact?? They are going to drive over the limit anyway. What we need, especially in Auburn, is POLICE doing thier jobs and catching people driving like idiots and ticket them. Also teenagers behind the wheel are a huge problem. Its time to seriously consider raising the driving age. Teenagers seem more and more immature these days. If they cant go have a beer at 18 then why should they be allowed to pilot a 3000 pound machine that can kill? Raise the driving age and hopefully we can keep some of the reckless teenagers off the road. Another area of concern is our elderly population. They do some pretty scary things out on the roads and most cannot even drive the speed limit for various reasons. As people age reaction times slow as well as eyesight and hearing declines. These folks should be retested regularly to make sure they are still safe drivers as they age. We could see a huge drop in traffic accidents if we keep the teens off the roads and retest the elderly population and get those dangerous drivers off the roads. Speed limits are irrelivant, the core of accidents lies totally in the laps of the young new drivers, and the old scared drivers. "

" I was just curious as to how enacting new laws to lower the speed limit is going to curb (no pun intended) the problem? The real solution is to enforce the laws we already have. Accidents happen when drivers are distracted and drivers are distracted when they have a cell-phone held to their ear. It's a huge problem, it's illegal and it needs to be enforced. "
