AUBURN - Cayuga County will continue to contract with Abscope Environmental, of Canastota, for asbestos removal during phase two of the county's asbestos abatement project.
During a special Legislature meeting Thursday night, the Legislature unanimously approved to continue contracting with Abscope for $69,650 to remove asbestos discovered in the tunnel and south basement of the County Court House.
Abscope was initially hired by the county to remove asbestos from the Board of Elections building.
“The financial impact of this situation will be hefty,” said Michele Sedor, D-Sennett. “We all worked extremely hard to get the county financially stable. All that's out the window.”
Phase two of the abatement will also include asbestos removal from the old county jail garage and the old post office basement.
Completion of phase two should take about three weeks, said an employee from Geomatrix, of Liverpool.
Geomatrix was the company hired by the county to conduct asbestos surveying throughout county facilities before removal began.
County spokeswoman Ann Petrus told the Legislature that the first floor of the BOE has been successfully remediated from asbestos. Required air sampling ordered in a Department of Labor citation and extra sampling conducted by the county on its own reported negative asbestos testing on the first floor.
The additional work requested by Abscope on heating pipe elbows leading to the second floor of the BOE building will be completed Friday, Petrus said.
“This is not acceptable the situation we're in,” said David Pappert, R-Auburn. “The amount of money we are going to have to spend on this is heartbreaking.”
Pappert told the Legislature he committed himself to bringing justice for all the people who may have been exposed to asbestos.
Legislature Chairman George Fearon said that BOE employees could retrieve documents and needed information from the BOE Friday. BOE employees will decide if they want to move back into their office before the elections.
