The town of Scipio's historic Sherwood Cemetery was brought into the limelight last year when the hamlet of Sherwood was named by the Preservation League of New York State as one of its “Seven to Save,” an annual list of the state's seven most endangered places.
This week, the preservation league received a $1,000 matching grant to analyze gravestones in the cemetery and develop treatment recommendations for damaged and deteriorating stones.

The cemetery, owned by Scipio, is a racially integrated burial ground in Sherwood, which played an active role in the Underground Railroad and Abolitionist movement, according to a press release from the preservation league.

C.R. Jones, of Roseboom, will complete the study. Jones is conservator emeritus for the New York State Historical Museum in Cooperstown. The preservation league will fund the consulting costs as its match for the $1,000 grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation's grant program.

In the release, preservation league president Jay DiLorenzo said the cemetery markers range from fair to good, but said some are severely damaged.

The cemetery is one among several historic sites in Sherwood with ties to the abolitionist movement.
