Timothy D. Hutchings, the teenager who died in a motor vehicle crash Saturday, died from massive head injuries, New York State Police and Auburn Police Department sources confirmed today.
The Onondaga County Medical Examiner's office conducted the autopsy this week.

Police say the driver of the vehicle, Nicholas W. Raymond, 18, of 6206 West Lake Road, Auburn, and an unidentified passenger left a critically injured Hutchings, 19, in the eastbound 2002 GMC Envoy after hitting a tree in the front yard of 2850 Sand Beach Road, Fleming. Neither Raymond nor the passenger were seriously injured.

Hutchings was found dead in the vehicle after 7 a.m. Saturday by first responders in the back seat of the sport utility vehicle. It was four hours after the accident.

Auburn police believe that Hutchings was picked up from his home shortly before the accident. They are investigating a party at 27 Evans St. at which police say that Ashley Hadden, 18, of 2158 W. Genesee St. Road, Aurelius, falsely reported the GMC Envoy stolen at 3:30 a.m. Hutchings may not have been at the party, police said.

A series of interviews with partygoers is being conducted. The Envoy is registered in the name of Hadden's father, Gary, and police said Raymond drove the vehicle often. Hadden was not in the SUV at the time of the accident, police said.

She has been charged with the misdemeanor of third-degree falsely reporting an accident. Raymond has been charged the felony of leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident along with traffic infractions.

The unidentified passenger may not have any legal liability for leaving the scene of the accident, police said.

Both Hadden and Raymond have posted bail.

" would it be a felony for the driver to leave the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident, and NOT for the other passengers. What is the difference who was driving when the accident occured. Once it happened everyone in that car had equal opportunity and responsibility to those injured, not just the driver. "

" We don't know if Tim Hutchings was dead before his companions left or not. If he was already past help, his companions are still culpable of wrong-doing, esp. the driver, but if they left and he was still alive and could have been saved, then lock them up for good -- and that goes for the non-driving companion too -- you don't leave a mortally wounded person without going for help even if you are a passerby. Maybe the other companion was underage and that's why s/he has not yet been named. Maybe the other companion is getting a deal for cooperation with the authorities. Not much the public can do but wait and see -- and try to instill more responsible values in our own children. "

" my heart goes out to the family of timothy but it looks to me that all kids involved needed more guidance in there life not just nicholas and the other passengers and i also feel for the parents of all the teenagers because it is not easy raising teenagers in 2006 you cant be with them 24 hours a day you can only try to guide them to do right but it doesnt always work out that way i wish all the kids involved and all the familys involved the best "

" First of all this is tragic and my prayers go out to all involved. However all the dumbest things to say where were the parents.....HELLO these kids are 18 yrs old and over. Did you ever think that the party was at another young adults house where NO parents live??? 18 year olds can rent apartments. They no longer need their parents permission. Yes as parents we are liable until they are 21 however we have little or no control from 18 on. All we can do is pray that we raised our kids the best we can and they make the right decisions in life. "

" What about accessory before and after the fact. Negligence? The other teen is getting manslaughter or something I am sure. The DA should send a message! "

" The name of the other passenger is unidentified because he's under age, it's simply illegal to release the name of a minor. "

" Why has the young man been allowed to post $5K cash or $10K bond??? Where is the justice in this case. Why have his parents hired a prominent Syracuse attorney? What about the parents of Timothy? They have no son any more because of the actions of someone else's child...and they are trying to protect this young man with a prominent attorney!!! Let him take his punishment. Nothing will ever bring back Timothy. Hopefully the Auburn teenagers will learn from this, and he will not have died in vain. "

" WHY IS THE OTHER PASSENGER STILL UNIDENTIFIED? ARE WE TRYING TO COVER SOMETHING UP? SEEMS LIKE THE NAME SHOULD BE REALEASED BY NOW "

" In all the teenagers involved in the accident and the party where was the parents or proper gaurdians? Could this have happened if we had a curfew? Would this have happened if we had had some kind of license restrictions for after dark on under twenty one year olds? History has shown us in this area that our kids have been reckless drivers more and stiffer instruction and observation is needed. Another life is now wasted needlessly. "
