I nodded my head in agreement all through the reading of Mike Reagan's column in Saturday's edition regarding our “enabling” immigrants to survive without learning the English language.
We have made it much too easy for them to continue with their own language, by using signs instead of the printed word for traffic directions, by printing instructions for operating appliances, etc. in three or four languages, with English usually on the last page, by allowing immigrants all privileges English-speaking folks have -- all without making them learn to speak our country's “official” language.
Not only that, but judging from the grammatical, spelling and punctuation errors we continually see in newspapers (The Citizen included) and periodicals, I find it hard to believe that English is even being taught in our schools these days.
What a sad state of affairs.
