Ex-Spice Girl says baby was physically abused
Geri Halliwell has complained to police that her 3-month-old daughter was physically abused, the singer's assistant said.
The singer's complaint was about “an incident concerning her daughter Bluebell whilst in the care of a temporary member of staff,” Antony Read said Saturday. Halliwell made the complaint at a London police station Aug. 18, Read said.
“Bluebell is now happy and well, and there are no further concerns for her welfare,” he added in a statement.
London's Metropolitan Police confirmed the force was investigating an allegation of physical abuse involving a 3-month-old. No one has been arrested.
Halliwell - Ginger Spice of ‘90s “girl power” group the Spice Girls - gave birth to Bluebell Madonna, her first child, in May.
Binoche gets first-hand account of intelligence
Juliette Binoche got some insight for her role in the thriller “A Few Days in September” from an acquaintance who, as it turned out, was a secret agent.
In the film, directed by Argentinian Santiago Amigorena, Binoche plays a French secret service agent whose mission goes wrong.
Binoche sought background from the acquaintance on the history of the Middle East and relations with the West.
“I was able to understand that you can never really retire as a secret agent, because you will always have secrets,” Binoche said at the Venice Film Festival on Friday. “I think an actor needs a certain realism and truth to be real on the screen.”
Guitar thieves sentenced to probation
Two men accused of stealing guitars once used by Faith Hill and Nickelback have been sentenced to probation.
Jeffrey H. Lanahan, 44, was accused of stealing at least a dozen instruments from his employer, Paul Reed Smith Guitars. He gave them to Michael J. Kelly, 42, accused of passing them along to another man who sold them on eBay.
Lanahan and Kelly, who had pleaded guilty, were sentenced Friday. Circuit Judge Ronald A. Silkworth ordered Lanahan to serve three months of house arrest and five years of probation. Kelly was sentenced to three years' probation.
Both men must undergo evaluation for drugs and alcohol, as well as pay restitution for the stolen guitars. Of the nearly $60,000 worth of guitars, all but $21,050 worth were recovered. Lanahan agreed to pay $21,050 in restitution, while Kelly will pay $5,000.
Isley Brother gets jail for income tax evasion
Isley Brothers lead singer Ronald Isley has been sentenced to three years and one month in prison for tax evasion.
Isley was also ordered to pay $3.1 million in back taxes to the Internal Revenue Service, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Conte.
He was convicted last year of five counts of tax evasion and one count of willful failure to file a tax return.
During a hearing Friday, defense attorney Anthony Alexander argued that the 65-year-old singer should receive probation instead of prison time because of complications from a stroke and a recent bout with kidney cancer. Isley is expected to be sent to a prison hospital facility.
Alexander also pleaded for leniency because Isley had been attempting to pay down his IRS debt. But U.S. District Judge Dean Pregerson declined to sentence the R&B singer to less time than called for under federal guidelines.
“The term serial tax avoider has been used. I think that's appropriate,” Pregerson said.
Alexander argued during trial that “unfortunate circumstances,” such as the deaths of two of Isley's accountants, made him unable to get records together and pay taxes during the years that led to the criminal charges.
