A 32-year-old man who allegedly assaulted a family member with a metal paint can was arrested Saturday night after a search Friday and Saturday by the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies found Kelly R. Byrne in a shed at a property in Sterling owned by his father, said sheriff Rob Outhouse.

At 2:19 p.m. Friday, deputies responded to the domestic incident report at a Humphrey Road residence in Sterling. Upon their arrival, Byrne was encountered outside of the residence, but he fled into the woods behind the home. The sheriff's office conducted a two-hour search Friday using a K-9 unit and a helicopter from the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office.

Byrne was reportedly recently released from a Virginia mental institution.

The male family member who was assaulted was treated at Oswego Hospital for blunt trauma injuries and lacerations to his head and later released.

Byrne was arraigned Saturday and remanded to Cayuga County Jail. Because of his history and the events of the weekend, Byrne was given a mental health and suicide screening upon entering the jail, Outhouse said.

" I am writing regarding an issue that is very important to myself and the neighbors in our town. We are trying to figure out why the transportation dept for our city schools will not bus our children that are just under two miles from their school. In an ordinary circumstance, this would not be a concern. In the town of Sennett, which is outside the city of Auburn, there are no sidewalks for our children to walk on. There are no crossing guards to let them know when it is safe to cross . The speed limit outside the city is 40 mph, but on any given day you will see cars going as fast as 65 mph. So, after tring to find out who is responsible for the safety of our children, the answer still comes out the same,no one. The school board can't help. The Town can't put in sidewalks. So, my question is, if God forbid, one of our children is injured by a vehicle while walking to or from school, who is liable? If anyone can help with the answer to this most disturbing dilemma, please let me know. "
