AMH to offer free cholesterol testing
Auburn Memorial Hospital will offer free cholesterol testing, as well as music, food and fun when it sponsors its annual Heart Expo from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23.
Cholesterol testing will be available from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m.
The screening requires between 12 to 15 hours of fasting beforehand, but participants can take advantage of free snacks on hand afterward.
The hospital will also offer free pulmonary function tests, blood-pressure screenings and medication counseling by pharmacists.
Young people can participate in special programs, including a moon walk, carnival games and face painting. All children attending will get free passes to Reva Rollerdrome, and have chances to tour a Mercy Flight helicopter, fire engine and a TLC ambulance.

Funds could be available for courses
Pending approval from the Office of Children and Family Services, families who qualify financially for day care assistance through Cayuga County may now be eligible for assistance to attend county-approved courses of study.
The courses may lead to employment in fields such as culinary arts, computer technology and early childhood education.

The Jordan-Elbridge Central School District will begin collecting school taxes Tuesday, Sept. 5.
Tax periods extend from Sept. 5 to Oct. 4 (0-percent interest fee); Oct. 5 to Oct. 31 (2-percent interest fee) and Nov. 1 to Nov. 3 (3-percent interest fee).
Residents should note the following changes: all mail-in payments should be sent to Jordan-Elbridge CSD, P.O. Box 711, Buffalo, NY 14240-0711.
This is the M&T Tax Lock Box processing center.
All walk-in payments are to be made at M&T Bank, 239 East Main St., Elbridge. The bank will be open to receive payments from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays and from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays.

Museum to host tractor presentation
The director of the Ward O'Hara Agricultural Museum will make a presentation on vintage tractors at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, at the Frontenac Museum, 178 Cayuga St., Union Springs.
Norman Riley's talk is free and open to the public. Riley also will display his collection of hand-crafted, detailed replicas of older model tractors.
Organizers will serve refreshments following the speech. Spectators are welcome to bring their tractors for the presentation.

Literacy Volunteers of Cayuga County will be providing free training sessions to volunteers interested in becoming tutors.
The workshops, which will train volunteers to be English as a second language tutors, will be held on Sept. 12, 14, 19, 21, 16 and 28. All classes will begin at 6 p.m. Classes are held at the Willard Chapel, 17 Nelson St., Auburn.
