Chess is world's oldest board game, not Go

I would like to point out a few historical inaccuracies as to Go being the oldest game in the world (“Go is One of the Most Popular Games in the World” in the Aug. 17 edition).
Go is in fact the oldest game in the world not to undergo a rule change in about the last four thousand years.

However, chess is actually the world's oldest board game.

Chess originated in India in the seventh century B.C.

This is known as all words for chess from many languages are derived from the Sanskrit game “Chaturanga.”

Chaturanga was the first game to include horse, camel and elephant, which would later become the knight, bishop and rook respectively.

Chess was formed as many different variations of the game were invented.

Therefore, chess in its earliest form, is much older than Go.

The Auburn High School Chess Club is one of the fastest growing clubs in the school.

Last year, membership saw an increase of over 50 percent. Fund-raising for our group through shirt sales has allowed us to buy new boards for the club.

We will be setting two traveling teams to take on rival chess clubs from other schools.

This year will also mark another shirt sale, allowing people to add to their collection with four more memorable quotes on the back.

We will be meeting after school this year and have members who love to teach the game of chess to people entering into it.

It is the belief of the Auburn High School Chess Club's constitution to teach the thinking man's game to the school. We hope to see yet another increase in membership this year in both our main club at the high school, as well as our developmental clubs at both East and West Middle School.

Meier has the background to succeed in Washington

As a voter, I'm always concerned when a candidate tries to tell me everything that he's going to do, before he tells me what he's done.

Ray Meier, as a state senator for a decade and an Oneida County executive six years before that, has a lot of tax cuts, pro-family, pro-jobs work he can point to.

From Ray's vast experience comes his vision for what he will do when we elect him to Congress.

So before someone tells you what they're going to do, ask them what they've done. Ray Meier has done a great deal for my area and I know he will do a great deal more for many years to come.

" The letter claiming to correct "historical inaccuracies" pertaining to the age of the game Go had itself historical inaccuracies. The letter-writer correctly stated that Go's origins go back over 4000 years. but to state that chess originated earlier because a version of it was played in India in the 7th century BC (my own sources say 7th century CE, meaning AD, and that a version was played in China as early as the 2nd century BC) makes no sense. As far as I know, a century is only one hundred years, so any source that says chess originated in the 7th century BC still makes it only about 2600 to 2700 years old, compared to Go's 4000 years. "
