AUBURN - Five years ago, Debbie Siracusa Guzalak was diagnosed with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. The onset of the disease was due to her weakened immune system and exposure to chemical substances in the environment.
Guzalak is currently undergoing an intense detoxification program at the Hippocrates Health Institute, said Jerry Siracusa, Debbie's brother and one of the benefit's organizers.

Her condition has left her body overloaded with toxins, which causes her digestive system to malfunction, he said. Guzalak has trouble remaining healthy because of the overload of poisons in her blood, liver and kidneys, and that in turn causes her immune system to shut down, he continued.

So Siracusa and his family spent months planning Sunday's celebration at the Knights of Columbus

Spearheaded by her father, Joe Siracusa, her loved ones put together a plethora of things for the numerous guests to see, hear, eat and enjoy.

After a $10 donation at the door, attendees were treated to a huge buffet put together by Guzalak's father, who is a retired chef at the Blue Water Grill in Skaneateles.

The buffet featured barbeque chicken with all the fixings, desserts, and other items. In addition to a 50/50 raffle, the organizers put together an auction that included gift baskets and NASCAR memorabilia.

Live entertainment was provided by local musicians Loren Barrigar and Heather Lardeo.

And of course, seeming to be everywhere at once, was emcee Art Wenzel. Microphone at his lips, the host roamed about the banquet hall, greeting newcomers, thanking the many contributors, and otherwise chatting with the guests.
