S. Cayuga to hold surplus auction
The Southern Cayuga Central School District will auction off surplus equipment next weekend. Items for sale include personal computers, student desks and chairs, kitchen equipment, bus parts and other school-related items.
The auction will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 26, near the greenhouse at Southern Cayuga Central School. Anyone interested can direct inquiries to Charlie Mellor, the district's business administrator, at 364-8711.
Auburn's finance department honored
The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada awarded the city of Auburn the Achievement for Excellence award in financial reporting. Comptroller Lisa Green heads the Auburn finance department, the department primarily responsible for preparing the award-winning comprehensive annual financial report.
An impartial panel judges the document. Judges looked for the constructive spirit of full disclosure to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users to read the report.
The government finance group is a nonprofit professional association serving 16,000 municipalities throughout both nations.
East Middle School to hold orientation
East Middle School will hold an orientation for incoming sixth-graders and other new students at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, in the school auditorium.
The school is located at 191 Franklin St. in Auburn.
Public invited to speak about RSVP
The public is welcome to speak about the future locations of the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program and the Senior Citizens program in Auburn.
Auburn public works superintendent Gerald DelFavero proposed moving both organizations into the Schwartz Towers as a belt-tightening measure to squeeze $36,000 from the department's budget.
DelFavero and other city officials invite the public to comment at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, in the community room at Schwartz Towers, 90 North St. “I know this raises some hairs, but I think it needs to be discussed,” DelFavero said.
If they don't move the RSVP from the Boyle Center, the city will have to pay $18,000 in rent and hire a part-time clerk, he estimated.
Seward House to host tree lecture
Community forester Walt Aikman will discuss what Auburn's trees tell about the city's past and future at the last Seward House Brown Bag Lecture Series, scheduled for noon, Wednesday, Aug. 23. Admission is free and participants are encouraged to bring their lunch.
Please call 252-1283 for more information.
The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
J-E schools changing phone numbers
As the Jordan-Elbridge Central School District upgrades its telephone system to accommodate a fiber-optic network, it will gradually phase out existing numbers for its facilities.
Beginning Sept. 6, callers can dial the following numbers to access buildings in the district: main district number: 689-8500; high school: 689-8510; middle school: 689-8520; Ramsdell Elementary School: 689-8530; Elbridge Elementary School: 689-8540.
Callers can use the old phone numbers for a time.
