It's no wonder the Austrian horse breed known as Haflinger is taking American equestrians by storm. The epitome of versatility and gentility in their acceptance of training and kindness toward humans, Haflingers are the horse of choice for serious riders and as close to a unicorn as any child is going to get.
“The attraction of the breed is they're gorgeous,” said Haflinger owner Karen Young.
Adding to their beauty is their temperament and perfect size. Young said that they make great children's horses and are good for those who prefer horses closer to the ground.
When Dirk and Karen Young, owners and operators of Twin Birch Farm, host the annual Haflinger Classic Horse Show, each horse and exhibitor gets a chance to shine.
Approximately 100 horses will show in the event, which will feature halter English and Western riding, trail, jumping and driving.
There will also be a “four-in-hand” driving team performing.
On Friday, four-time nationally winning driver Muffy Seaton of South Carolina will give a clinic from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Individual lessons are already booked but Young said there is still room for auditors.
Seaton will give lessons to prepaid participants and at 12:30 p.m. that day there will be a clinic on how to choose the right bit for a horse's best performance.
