AUBURN - On his last day as city manager for Auburn, John Salomone already has a strategy to ensure the city council he will serve next week won't have any infighting.

“I guess I'll have to get a couple of Red Sox hats just to placate the council members,” Salomone said.
Newington, Conn., where he will serve as town manager, lies on the border that separates the Yankees fans from the Boston Red Sox diehards.
The self-proclaimed weather freak will miss those lake-effect storms that would dump 3 feet of snow on the city overnight.
He has a weather station in his home and would sometimes drive toward the water to experience wild weather if it missed Auburn.
The father of two also will miss co-workers and the people that he saw regularly.
“Sometimes you see these people more than you do your family,” Salomone said.
Councilor Thomas McNabb voiced his appreciation of Salomone's service during his farewell city council meeting Wednesday. Salomone took the landfill from bleeding thousands of dollars, to the facility that now makes hundreds of dollars in profit, McNabb said.
Mayor Timothy Lattimore switched the weekly meeting to Wednesday so Salomone could attend.
Former councilors thanked Salomone for his service during the meeting.
William Jacobs, who served on the council from 2002 to 2005, joked that he knew the manager when he had black hair. He applauded Salomone for pulling the city out of dark times.
While Salomone is trying to look ahead to his next position as town manager in Newington, there is always more to do when you leave a place, he said.
“Leaving things not completed is hard, but government is like infinity, you complete a project and then you start another one - it's a continuum,” Salomone said. “I am sad about that.”
