AUBURN - Auburn will soon have America's most wanted street.
City councilors gave the nod to name the road that will connect North Street and Grant Avenue after John Walsh during the Wednesday meeting. Walsh, an Auburn native, is the host of the long-running television show “America's Most Wanted.”

Only one councilor voted against John Walsh Boulevard. Councilor Thomas McNabb suggested the city recognize former mayor Edward Lauckern. Lauckern died in September 2005.

Councilor David Dempsey did not attend the meeting.

“Hopefully with the development of the city, there will be more roads to name,” Lattimore said.

The contractor for the connector road project needed to have a name so the company could furnish signs for the first section, which is nearing completion. The undertaking was split into four sections, and the first portion runs from Grant Avenue to the water tank behind Wal-Mart.

Lattimore added that his father, Paul Lattimore, who served as mayor from 1968 to 1983, also could be a good candidate to name a street after.

However, he suggested Walsh because he is an internationally known Auburnian. Walsh has helped people around the world, he added.

Walsh is scheduled to attend next week's meeting, which starts a half-hour earlier than usual. The mayor intends to present the television star with a key to the city and a street sign bearing his name.

The city already boasts (Herbert) Anderson Circle, (Leonard) Greene Street, (Edward) Boyle Center, (Paul) Lattimore Hall and (Maurice) Schwartz Towers.
