State Sen. Mike Nozzolio has secured $425,000 in state funding for The Finger Lakes Institute and Cayuga County to address critical problems of Owasco Lake.
Nozzolio announced the funding at Emerson Park Thursday afternoon, five weeks after holding a public informational meeting to discuss Owasco Lake issues.

"If we're going to protect the lake, the action needs to be immediate and continuous," Nozzolio said.

The Finger Lakes Institute at Hobart and William Smith Colleges received $325,000 to oversee the cleanup of Owasco Lake. Nozzolio also presented the county with a $100,000 state grant to purchase a transport vehicle and shoreline conveyor for the county to enhance weed harvesting efforts.

"It's a good day for the lake," said Al Kozlowski, of the Owasco Watershed Lake Association.

John Halfman, of the Finger Lakes Institute, first plans to continue the bi-weekly monitoring of the lake and streams with the funding.
