Gary Giannotta's wait is over. Yesterday, shortly after 2 p.m., the city's Civil Service Commission paved the way for his permanent appointment to the top spot in the city's police department. The commission unanimously agreed to allow Giannotta's permanent promotion after putting off a decision two weeks ago. City Manager Al Emmi said Giannotta's appointment would be effective immediately.

All flags at the state capitol flew at half-staff on Wednesday in honor of the passing of former Assemblyman William E. “Bill” Bush, 65, of Camillus and Skaneateles. A Republican, Bush served seven terms in the State Assembly representing the 121st district including the towns of Camillus, Onondaga, Otisco, Elbridge, Skaneateles and part of the city of Syracuse.

Born in Auburn and raised in Jordan, Bush died Tuesday at about 10:30 p.m., at Community General Hospital, in Syracuse, after a five-year battle with cancer.

"He was a worker and a fighter and no one really knew he had cancer for almost five years," said his son, Brian Bush. "He was in remission several times, but he just didn't want to talk about it. He never stopped working as the owner and president of our four funeral homes."
