HIT: Great Race organizers are implementing new rules for alcohol this year to address what has become an increasing problem at the after-race party.
Drinking has always been a part of the annual post-race gathering, but a number of fistfights and other ridiculous behavior really soured the event for many visitors last year.
Anyone drinking alcohol at Emerson Park Sunday must have an ID bracelet, given to them after they've shown ID. Volunteers with the correction officers union, NYSCOPBA, law enforcement officers and Emerson Park security will be enforcing the rule.
Only one 6-pack will be allowed per person and alcohol may not be brought into the park after 3 p.m.
We're pleased to see the Great Race committee taking a proactive approach to curb excessive drinking.
This great event needs to remain focused on sports and not the beer bash it had the chance of becoming.
HIT: Cayuga County is taking a creative approach to help snowmobilers save money on their annual registrations.
When New York increased the snowmobile registration fee to $100 this year, a stipulation said that snowmobile club members would pay only $45. So the county Department of Motor Vehicles office will have club applications on hand when snowmobilers come in for their 2007 registrations, allowing riders to easily save $55.
MISS: Federal authorities say a Weedsport resident was among several people recently charged with possessing endangered animals. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service pursued five criminal cases as part of its Operation Cat Tale, meant to stop the illegal sale of ocelots. Only 70 of the spotted cats are believed to exist in the wild in the United States, and the rare animals have been protected by international laws for more than 30 years.
