AUBURN - Cayuga County employees will offer a way for snowmobile operators to avoid paying the recently increased state registration fee.
Under the passed state budget, the registration fee increased to $100, unless a rider is a member of a snowmobile club.
Sue Dwyer, Cayuga County Clerk, explained to the Government Operations Committee Tuesday night that she and Marlyn Salato, county DMV supervisor, will offer club applications at the DMV when operators come to get their 2007 registration form.
“We're doing them a favor,” Dwyer said. “Operators can save $55 by joining a club.”
If an operator registers for a club, they can avoid a $100 fee in exchange for the $45 price club members pay. The county offers plenty of snowmobile clubs and associations to join, Dwyer said. Dwyer will offer a map at the DMV showing where the different clubs are located in the county so operators can choose to join one near their home.
Dwyer suggests operators come to the DMV in the next few weeks to join.
At the DMV, operators will be able to fill out a self-certification form provided by the New York State Snowmobile Association claiming club membership. They are then entitled to the reduced fee, according to a news release from the county.
In other news:
€ The Cayuga County Board of Elections will ask the county for an additional $50,000 in their 2007 budget to allot for the unexpected price of voting machines to be used in 2007.
Several counties, along with Cayuga, did not realize that the federal government's Help America Vote Act is only responsible for 95 percent of the costs.
New voting machines will cost 5 percent of the purchase price. Expenses to train people to operate the machines will also cost the county 5 percent of the cost, according to Board of Elections officials. BOE officials hope orders for the new machines will go out Dec. 31 and the order will be received between February and April 2007.
BOE employees are ensuring that county polling locations are as handicapped accessible as possible for this year's elections. Locations that do not already have accessibility will be provided with the proper equipment by BOE only on days of elections.
Buildings without proper accessibility will not be given the equipment to keep. The BOE will keep the equipment to use when needed.
