Each Tuesday, The
Citizen features a health professional from the
Finger Lakes community
in The Banks:
This week, we spotlight Dinah Guarino, a nurse practitioner with Auburn Memorial Hospital.
Q. What is the most rewarding part of your job?
A. Seeing patients get
better.
Q. Describe your ideal patient.
A. Well, most health care providers want compliant patients, but I think it's important for patients to be actively involved in their care. That is they should be informed about their illness and their medications, etc. Patients should ask questions and feel comfortable with the care they are receiving.
Q. When you're sick, would you want someone like you to be your nurse practitioner?
A. Yes, I think so.
Q. What is the best piece of advice you could give someone to stay healthy?
A. I know this will sound like a cliche, but I think diet and exercise is the key. I see many elderly patients in the hospital and those who are doing the best are those who have kept active both mentally and physically. They are also near their ideal weight.
Q. Did you always want to be in the health care field?
A. Well, I really wanted to be a veterinarian when I was young, but I'm glad I chose this profession now.
Q. For someone considering a career like yours, what advice would you offer?
A. Pick your career for job satisfaction. If you don't like what you do, your work days are going to be very long and unrewarding.
Q. What's your ideal cure for the common cold?
A. Tylenol, Sudafed, chicken soup, lots of Kleenex and just to wait it out.
Q. In your opinion, which medical TV show is most realistic? Which is your favorite?
A. Sorry, I don't watch medical TV shows - the ones I have seen don't seem very realistic to me.
Q. Despite being in the health care field, people would probably be surprised that when I'm off the job, _____.
A. I'm probably mucking out horse stalls.
