Ride for the Red revs up in Auburn
The third annual Ride for the Red, hosted by the Cayuga County Chapter of the American Red Cross, will take registrations starting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at NYSEG, Route 5 and 20, in Auburn. The ride itself starts at noon and will take riders on a southern loop through Cayuga County.
The ride will conclude at the Polish Falcons, on Washington Street, with a chicken barbecue, musical entertainment and legal beverages. The Fest at the Nest is open to the public.
Cost per rider is $25; passengers are $20.
Preregistration is preferred by calling the Red Cross at 252-9596 or e-mailing chapter@ccredcross.org. All proceeds will benefit the disaster services.
Fundraiser planned for Tami Nelson
A Partylite fundraiser for Tami Nelson will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, at the Holiday Inn in Waterloo.
Nelson, a former resident of Waterloo, and a graduate of Skaneateles High School was diagnosed with stage 3 Hodgkins Lymphoma in February 2006. She has been undergoing chemotherapy and radiation ever since then.
Nelson, 23, is the daughter of Jim and Nancy Mosher of Skaneateles. Her husband David Nelson, 24, is the son of Paul and Amy Jo Nelson and Penny Nelson Kisor. David's grandparents are Ed and Jean Nelson of Waterloo and Floyd (Stub) and Marge Baker.
The event is sponsored by the Baker family.
Thirty-three percent of the total sales of Partylite candles will go to Tami in cash.

Walk held for
suicide prevention
The first “Out of the Darkness Community Walk” will take place in Syracuse on Aug. 19. The walk will be held at the Onondaga Lake Park with registration from 8 to 9 a.m. The 3K walk will start at 9 a.m. No registration fee is required. This walk is one of 70 nationwide with thousands participating from every state. Its goal is to contribute participants' voices to break the silence surrounding suicide.
The event benefits the American Foundation for suicide prevention and donations are now being accepted. Donors can go to www.outofthedarkness.org or www.afsp.org. If you choose the Syracuse event, you can view a list of the teams and also register to walk.
Support group meets for caregivers
The Alzheimer#'s Association will host a number of support groups in the months of August and September. The monthly meetings are open to caregivers of people with Alzheimer#'s disease.
A complete list of support groups may be downloaded at www.alzcny.org. For more information, contact the Alzheimer's Association at (800) 272-3900.
The group meets locally on the first Tuesday of each month. The next meeting in Auburn will be at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 5, at Mercy Health and Rehabilitation Center.
