The 12th annual Wheat Festival in King Ferry has a two-day event-filled calendar Friday and Saturday which focuses on the grain which has helped sustain rural life for centuries.
“We will be giving wheat thrashing demonstrations on Saturday outside the GHA (Genoa Historical Association) building powered up by our antique tractor,” said Dan Utter who co-chairs the festival with Barb Littlejohn. “Unfortunately our wheat behind the museum is down which means we will not be able to bind it for demonstration purposes.”
Visitors to the event should plan on stopping by the museum on Friday night and pick up forms for a scavenger hunt which concludes at 2 p.m. the following day. Live music will be provided from 6 to 9 p.m. by Joe and Karen Lonsky along with special features from the Lonsky's studio.
Refreshments will be served by the Southern Cayuga softball team. Saturday the Wheat Harvest Parade steps off at 11 a.m. on the crossroads of King Ferry (Routes 34B and 90), which will include floats, antique tractors and firetrucks.
The marchers will continue to the museum where live music provided by the local band, Restless, will give revelers a chance to party down while feasting on chicken barbeque, or hamburgers and hotdogs
Be sure to save room for pie, lots of pie, as there will be a pie-eating contest in the tents at the museum grounds. Craft sales by local artists will also be available throughout the festival.
