WEEDSPORT - Vic Coffey continued the “share the wealth” attitude on the Empire DIRT Series, becoming the third different winner in as many races Sunday night at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway. Coffey led every lap of the 35-lap big-block modified feature to garner his first-career CCFS victory.
“When the track is that fast up top, you can just carry the momentum all the way around,” Coffey said in victory lane. “There was a lot of brown up there, and I tried to use it.”
Coffey utilized the brown tacky high line to perfection, grabbing the lead at the race's outset and pulling away after each of four different caution periods.
The racing behind Coffey was tight, with side-by-side battles being waged all over the 3/8-mile clay oval. Pat Ward battled for much of the race with the No. 77x of Dale Planck before establishing himself in the No. 2 slot, chasing Coffey to the finish.
Jimmy Phelps then locked up with Planck for a torrid battle for third that lasted for the final 15 laps of the race. Phelps prevailed, nipping Planck at the line. Tim Fuller rounded out the top five.
Ryan Phelps was sixth, followed by Alan Johnson in seventh.
Danny Johnson was eighth, with Chuck Bower and Justin Haers completing the top-10 finishers.
Tim McCreadie was on hand in his father's Kinney Drugs No. 9, but was knocked out of the race on the very first lap after a tangle with Sean Beardsley put him into the turn two wall.
Shawn Donath picked up his first sportsman win of the season, besting runner-up Joe Williams in the 20-lap feature event.
Jeremy Pitcher was third, trailed by Russ Hefti and Roy Bresnahan.
“Big Mike” Minutlo won the 12-lap street stock feature, his first-ever at CCFS. Phil Marsden was second with Nick Rizzo third.
Dave Mannise and Dan Hoffman were fourth and fifth respectively.
Craig Dingey won the 25-lap Pitstop four-cylinder enduro over Bill and Carl Werner.
Next week at The Cayuga County Fair Speedway the big-block modifieds are on hiatus due to their yearly sojourn to Eldora Speedway in Ohio. The Empire DIRT Series will resume on Aug. 13.
The sportsman and street stocks will still take to the track with special distance races for both classes, and are joined by the four-cylinder enduro cars.
Race time remains 7 p.m.
