Even down 3-0 in the section semifinals, the 10-11-year-old team refused to let up.
Auburn scored the final four runs of the game, capped off by Matt Covich's two-run double in the fifth inning to advance to the championship game with a 4-3 win over Geddes, Sunday in Jamestown. Auburn faces Batavia today at 5:30 p.m. in Jamestown with a berth in the state tournament at stake.
“Geddes was the team to beat in this tournament,” Auburn coach Jim Drancsak said. “Defense was the key to winning this game. We just made all the plays today.”
Luke Drancsak took the mound for Auburn to start the game and found himself in a jam early. After retiring the first two batters, he gave up a walk and a home run, and Auburn was in a 2-0 hole after half of an inning.
The pitcher didn't seem bothered by it, though. He pitched the next three innings and only allowed two more hitsand one run while striking out three.
Meanwhile, the Auburn offense was off to a slow start. Geddes starter Ciro Frontale retired the first three Auburn batters and then got out of a bases-loaded jam in the second to keep Auburn scoreless through two.
But Nick Fiermonte changed that with one swing. Leading off the third inning, he hit a solo home run to get Auburn on the board. Joe Schillace added a double, but was stranded at the end of the inning.
Covich, who was 3-for-3 at the plate, led off the fourth inning with a single and took second on a pass ball. He scored on a single by Jimmy Spinelli to make it 3-2.
Covich came through again in the fifth. Matt Nolan led off with a single, Luke Drancsak followed with a fielder's choice, and Joe Schillace and Justin Fasce drew back-to-back walks. Covich stepped up with the bases loaded, and ripped a double to drive in the game-tying run and the go-ahead run.
Then he made sure it was enough for the win, shutting down Geddes in the final inning after pitching a scoreless fifth inning, too.
With two on and two out, Covich fanned the final batter to lock the victory.
“It shows a lot of his character, coming in down 3-1 and holding them,” Drancsak said of Covich, who was pitching in the tournament for the first time.
Fasce, Fiermonte, Conor Herr, Nico Lupo, and Brenden King all played well on defense to hold Geddes off the bases for most of the latter part of the game.
Kyle McNabb and Matt Moore each had singles.
