Hits and Misses

HIT: When Bruce Silvers and John McCarthy found themselves atop of a 50-foot tree after crashing a powered parachute, responders trained to handle just such an emergency made sure the rescue went smoothly.
The Cayuga County High Angle Rescue Team has people trained for the unexpected, and these pros took all the safety precautions necessary to make sure the two stranded men made it back to solid ground.

HIT: After decades of inactivity, the Friends Cemetery Association once again has a core group of workers dedicated to the upkeep of a historic Quaker cemetery in Ledyard.

Years of neglect have taken a toll on the gravestones and landscape of Friends Cemetery. The new group has already repaired some headstone foundations and plans to repair more this year. The cemetery caretakers have taken it upon themselves to show respect to the resting places of strangers who lived in the community before them.

MISS: A woman pleaded guilty in Cayuga County Court Thursday to driving drunk while her 11-year-old daughter was in the car.

The drunk-driving incident resulted in a minor accident - but it could have easily ended in tragedy.

We hope people can learn from hearing about mistakes made by others, and we hope people who drink will choose not to drive - especially when there are children involved.

HIT: A $5,000 donation will help the Auburn Police Department continue its K-9 program.

The dog biscuit company Milk-Bone and drug store chain Walgreens offered the gift without being asked, and the money couldn't have come at a better time.

The city of Auburn is in a tight budget situation, and the APD is preparing to retire one of its dogs.

The donation will allow the department to purchase a new dog to work in partnership with one of its officers.
