Starter Brandon Magee ensured that a three-run fifth inning was enough for the Auburn Doubledays. Magee continued his success on the mound, tossing six innings and allowing only one run as the Doubledays won their second straight, 4-3 over the State College Spikes at Medlar Field on Friday.
The Doubledays scored all four of their runs in the fourth and fifth innings. They jumped to a 1-0 lead on a wild pitch by Spikes starter Gary Daley.
Matt Lane's two-run single put the Doubledays on top again in the fifth and another wild pitch put Auburn up for good.
With the effort, Magee (1-0, 2.61 ERA) earned his first win of the year and Daley (4-3, 4.15) picked up the loss.
The Spikes tacked on two runs in the bottom of the eighth off Auburn reliever Ben Harrison, but Scott Byrnes entered and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up the save.
Outfielder Jonathan Baksh continued to sizzle with a 3-for-4 day at the plate and Lane also continued his hot streak with two hits and two RBIs.
Auburn infielder Brian Hall made his first appearance since July 8. Hall, who has been on the disabled list with an injured wrist, pinch-hit for Manny Sena in the ninth and lined out to right field.
Ben Zeskind also doubled, extending his road hit streak to 10 games.
