Annual Montezuma Muckrace planned

The 10th annual Montezuma Muckrace is being planned for Sept. 8 and 9, at the Montezuma Wetlands Complex.

The deadline to register is Aug. 15.

The Muckrace, organized by Audubon New York and Friends of the Montezuma Wetlands, is a 24-hour birding competition that raises money for bird conservation within the Montezuma Wetlands Complex.

This year they are shooting for $10,000 to put towards a conservation project to study the habitat characteristics of the Cerulean Warbler in the complex, which may support 40 percent of New York's population.

Prizes will be awarded to the team that raises the most money and to those teams that record the greatest number of species.

Money is raised through registration fees and pledges (per species or flat donations).

The event starts at 9 a.m. Sept. 8, and a closing ceremony is at 9 p.m. Sept. 9. Teams consisting of three or more individuals bird together throughout the period to locate as many birds as possible within Montezuma.

It is not mandatory to bird the entire 24-hours.

For more information or to receive a registration packet, contact Jillian Liner at jliner@audubon.org or (607) 254-2437.

Zwack offers fabric art workshop

The Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA) will offer a class in fabric art during the 2006 summer term.

The two-session workshop will be taught by Annemarie Zwack from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 7 and Aug. 9.

The course is open to all adults, with or without sewing experience, and to children ages 12 and up if accompanied by an adult.

Zwack will demonstrate her textile storytelling techniques, and provide lots of time to explore methods and play with materials.

Annemarie will help students articulate and execute their own ideas in fabric starting with sketching, and moving to painting, cutting, embellishing and sewing.

Participants must register in advance. Registration can be made on-line at www.csma-ithaca.org, by phone at (607) 272-1474 or in person at the school itself.

The Community School of Music and Arts is located at 330 E. State St. in downtown Ithaca.
