Beleaguered motorists, having endured a summer of major construction on Route 31, can look forward to more of the same on Route 34. Road resurfacing will begin at Brutus Street in the center of Weedsport and stretch north on Route 34 to Cato, said Douglas Hill, state Department of Transportation project manager. “We are picking up where we left off last year and heading north to the intersection of Route 370 in Cato,” Hill said. Last year, the DOT resurfaced Route 34 from the intersection of Routes 5 and 20 in Auburn to downtown Weedsport. Work on the $863,000 project is expected to begin next week and will take four to six weeks, Hill said. The project, which will be handled by Jana Rock Construction of Cazenovia, will entail “milling” the present surface and replacing it with
1 1/2 inches of new blacktop.

A casino in Cayuga County looks like a bad bet. Last week, members of Upstate Citizens for Equality picketed outside Assemblyman Gary Finch's South Street office in protest to an agreement allowing the Seneca Nation to build three casinos in western New York. They voiced concerns that the bill could set a precedent for future Indian-owned casinos, meaning one might someday find its way to Cayuga County. Monday, state Sen. Michael Nozzolio, R-Fayette, announced an agreement with Sen. Majority Leader Joseph Bruno R-C-Troy, restricting the Cayuga Indians from ever building a casino in New York.
