A fox that bit three people in Weedsport Monday tested positive for rabies, said Eileen O'Connor, director of Environmental Health for Cayuga County.
Stacey LaClair of Weedsport was bitten Monday afternoon at her home on West Brutus Street after chasing away a fox that charged out of weeds and bit her 4-year-old daughter, Jessica. The fox also bit Kevin Sordelet.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation released the test results Wednesday afternoon to the county health department.
Two more foxes were spotted in LaClair's backyard Tuesday.
LaClair, her daughter and Sordelet all received antibiotics and began rabies vaccinations Monday night at Auburn Memorial Hospital.
According to the Wadsworth Center, New York State Department of Health, foxes with rabies have not had sightings in the county since 2001. Six cases were found then, in both gray and red foxes.
Following earlier reports of foxes acting aggressively in the county, O'Connor said, “My most important suggestion is to keep your pets vaccinated. Keep an eye on your pets if they are acting strangely.”
O'Connor also recommends keeping a safe distance from all wild animals.
