Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, welcome to the circus. Traveling all the way from Hugo, Okla., the Kelly Miller Circus will be setting up business in Locke on Tuesday. But, for a real treat, circus chair Stewart Wood said, one of the best features is the erecting of the tent.
“They use the elephants to place the poles, that's one of the best parts, but you want to get there early to see the whole thing.”
Set-up begins around 9 a.m. on Tuesday, but Wood advises guests to get there around 8:45 a.m., so nothing is missed.
This is the third year for the Moravia Rotary Club to sponsor the circus at the Locke Fairgrounds and Wood assures that there's something for everyone.
“Of course, there'll be peanuts, cotton candy and all the goodies, as well as balloons and clowns everywhere.”
Wood said that the Moravia Rotary Club sees this as an opportunity to give back to the community and just to have a great evening.
“This is an event where profit is not our main concern, and I've never been disappointed with their performance, there's not a bad seat in the house,” Wood said. “It more just to have fun than to make money.”
The Moravia Rotary Club hopes the circus will just be a night for people to come and enjoy and to start a regular schedule for the circus performers to come to the fairgrounds about every two to three years.
The event is completely handicap accessible and the tent holds about 1,500 people in an area that encompasses the one ring show.
“There's always something going on, from animals to high wire acts, to trapeze. They even offer elephant rides and animals to pet during the intermission,” Wood said.
He said the best part the performers' athleticism.
“I'm amazed at how they can start on the high wires then do something with one of the animals. They have a way one with animals then they're flipping in the air and catching bars,” he explained with the giddiness of child witnessing the performance in his mind.
