Church to host film viewing, discussion

The Faith and Film series will show this month's selection at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 20, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 17 William St.

Viewers may watch “The Laramie Project,” a film written after a homosexual college student, Matthew Shepard, was killed in Laramie, Wyo. Seward House to hold several events

A pair of events are planned for history buffs at the Seward House in Auburn this week.

Families can take a step back in time and have some old-fashioned fun at 19th century garden games from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, at the museum, 33 South St., Auburn.

Participants can play croquet and lesser known games, such as graces and hot butter beans. Organizers do not require registration. The event costs $2. For more information, call 252-1283.

On Wednesday, the museum hosts a lecture by Joan Marcoccia on 19th century artist Thomas Cole and his painting titled “Portage Falls on the Genesee River.” Then New York Gov. William H. Seward commissioned Cole to paint the view of the Portage Falls before a new canal was built nearby. The painting is now in the Seward House drawing room.

The 11 a.m. lecture is covered by the museum's regular admission, which is $6 for adults, $5 for AAA discounts and senior citizens, $2 for students and free for children under 12. Call 252-1283 to register.
