Doubledays avoid sweep

The Citizen staff report
Shane Benson gave Auburn's bullpen a much-needed rest, and four different Doubledays had RBIs to lead Auburn to a 4-1 win over the Hudson Valley Renegades Monday at Dutchess Stadium.

The win prevented the Doubledays from getting swept on the road for the second time this month.

The Doubledays went on top in the second inning when Ben Zeskind, Jonathan Baksh and Zach Kalter hit consecutive singles for the first run of the game. A groundout by Kelly Sweppenhiser scored Baksh, and Scott Campbell doubled to plate Kalter and put Auburn up 3-0.

That was plenty for Benson (3-1), who struck out eight batters while allowing just one run on five hits in six innings. Ted Serro was brilliant in relief, fanning four batters and holding the Renegades hitless in three shutout innings for his first save of the season.

The Renegades scored their only run in the fifth. Thomas Lagreid led off with a double, and John Matulia doubled two batters later to score Lagreid. Only two Renegades made it on base the rest of the game (walks) and neither made it past first base. Lagreid was the only Renegade all game to make it past second.

Auburn tacked on an insurance run in the eighth when Brian Jeroloman doubled home Matt Lane.
