Music for Murals 2006 gala is July 23
The Downtown Auburn Business Improvement District and the New York Institute of Dance and Education will present the New York Dance Festival finale and Music For Murals Family Fun Festival from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 23, the State Street mall.
Peter Mack#'s “Field of Hope” mural will be installed on Nash#'s Art building. This year's event is free. There will be raffles to raise funds. The grand prize is an acoustic guitar from Speno's Music.
The event will also feature art and food vendors, a live mural painting and other activities for the children, and live music from local and regional bands.
The festival will feature the national and international headliners, Adanfo (an African Drum and Dance Ensemble from Ghana) and Sean McLeod in the new national tour, “Music From A Black Man's Songbook.” Special guests include Jim Donovan, Justin King, and special guest star Paola Paz from Bogota, Colombia.
‘Menopause the Musical' extended
Syracuse Stage said recently that it will extend “Menopause The Musical,” through July 30. This is the seventh extension of the show, which was originally scheduled to close on June 11. To date, the musical has sold 38,592 tickets, the equivalent of 77 full houses. Tickets for these additional dates are on sale now: 7:30 p.m. July 25, 26 and 27; 8 p.m. July 28; 3 and 8 p.m., July 29; and 2 and 7 p.m. July 30
The musical is a comedic celebration of “the change” and all that comes with it, from eating binges to night sweats. The show features four middle-aged women who meet at a lingerie sale at a NewYork City Bloomingdale's. Although at first they seem to have no more in common than a shopping addiction, they soon learn that they share menopause experiences, bonding over their mutual frustrations with wrinkles, memory loss and (of course) those pesky hot flashes.
The show parodies classic songs of the 1950s, '60s and '70s. Tickets range in price from $19 to $45 and are available by calling the Syracuse Stage box office at 443-3275 or by visiting www.SyracuseStage.org.
Special seating for deaf at state fair
Officials of the New York State Fair will offer special grandstand seating and sign language interpretation for the deaf. Interpreters will be provided for any show that has seats sold in this special section. Seats are limited and are on a first come basis. The deadline to purchase tickets in this section is Aug. 18; so fair officials can contract with the interpreters. After that date, shows being interpreted will be announced and tickets will be available for those specific concerts through the date of the performance.
A number of tickets have been set aside for each concert. However, only those concerts that have seats sold in the deaf section by Aug. 18 will have sign language interpreters. Aurora of Central New York, Inc., is once again assisting the fair in coordinating arrangements for the concerts. Fair Access for the Deaf will also be providing sign language interpretation at various events and exhibits during the fair, including Chevrolet Court concerts in the special section.
Grandstand tickets are on sale now at the New York State Fair box office - presented by fye - by calling 487-7711, ext. 1231, Aurora of CNY at 422-7263, TDD at 422-9746 or by e-mailing aurorairs@auroraofcny.org.
