The Auburn Youth Bowling Association held its 23rd annual Scholarship and High Awards dinner and awarded $5,000 in scholarships to local sanctioned bowlers attending accredited colleges and also handed out several honors.
The recipients included: Nate Breese, Anthony DeTomaso, Chris Fleming, Briana Gomez, Kelley Horbal, Nick Janusz, Tiffany Radcliffe, Kevin Roche, Mike Roche, Allie Streeter and Colleen Willis.
Horbal and Kevin Roche took the top scholarship - the Vi Stoddard Scholarship, worth $1,250.
Horbal, 18, is the daughter of Mike Horbal and graduated from Auburn High School ranked 34th in a class of 335. She will attend Nazareth College where she will major in math education. An 11-year member of Auburn Youth Bowling, she averaged 164 this year and rolled a 244 in the Byrn's Junior Masters. She was on the High Honor Roll for four years and also played varsity softball for three years and was a cheerleader for football and basketball. She was the secretary Kevin Roche, 18, is the son of Andrew and Patricia Roche and graduated from Auburn High School 88th in a class of 335. He will attend Cayuga Community College. A 13-year member of Auburn Youth Bowling, he averaged 200 this year and rolled a 298 game in the Youth Bowlers Tour of CNY. He had an association high 772 series and 11 sanctioned 700 series during the past two years. He was part of the Character Ed Club, Spanish Club and was on the Honor Roll.
Nick Janusz and Anthony DeTomaso were the recipients of the Tom Aubin Scholarship ($750 apiece).
Janusz, 18, is the son of Joseph and Mary Janusz. He graduated 11th in his class of 71 at Dana L. West High School in Port Byron. He will be attending Florida Southern College, where he will major in business administration. A 14-year member of the Association, he has a high game of 279, a high series of 765, and is a two-time Byrn's Junior Masters qualifier. He was a member of the National Honor Society, captain of the varsity baseball and basketball teams, and was part of the Executive Leadership Group.
DeTomaso, 18, is the son of Edward and Melody DeTomaso and graduated from Auburn High School 18th in a class of 335. He will study electrical engineering at Cayuga Community College. A 12-year member, he has two first-place finishes in the Association Team Tournament and a first place in the Auburn Youth Leaders 3-6-9 Tournament. He was on the High Honor Roll and was a section leader for marching band.
Tiffany Radcliffe and Colleen Willis were awarded the Joan A. Petrocci Scholarship ($500).
Radcliffe, 17, is the daughter of Sandy Radcliffe and graduated from Southern Cayuga High School. She will study business at Onondaga Community College. An 11-year member, Radcliffe has earned awards for a triplicate game, high single and high series. She also played volleyball and was part of the Yearbook Committee, the Future Business Leaders of America and Golden Games.
Willis, 17, is the daughter of Maureen Willis and graduated from Dana L. West High School 26th in a class of 71. She will attend Cayuga Community College and study liberal arts, humanities and social science. A 12-year member, she was team captain all 12 years and received several awards, including third place high game scratch. She was a member of the band, yearbook, softball, Foreign Language Club and the Honor Society.
In the High awards, Gomez and Horbal tied for the girls high average (164), and Mike Roche and Nate Breese tied for the boys (205).
For the girls high single, Streeter rolled a 255 during the Byrn's Junior Masters, and Chris Fleming rolled a pair of 300s.
Gomez won the girls high series (622), and Kevin Roche had the high for the boys (772).
