Doubledays slip in Pinckney Division
After fighting Batavia for the top position in the New York-Penn League's Pinckney Division for the season's first couple weeks, Auburn has slipped a bit. The Doubledays are coming off a week in which they went 2-4 and at 8-9, are under .500 for the first time since they started the season 1-2. They now are fourth in the division.
To make matters worse, Auburn is coming off a three-game sweep at Mahoning Valley where they were outscored 17-7. The starting pitching has struggled especially early in the ballgames. The Scrappers outscored the Doubledays 9-0 in the first four innings of their last three contests.
Auburn's team batting average has slipped from .264 last Saturday to .243 today and the staff's ERA has shot up to 3.29 from last week's mark of 2.10.
The sweep at Mahoning Valley was also the first three-game sweep the Doubledays have endured since Aug. 19-21 of 2005 when Auburn was swept at home by Jamestown.
Auburn's ace on the hill
Hector Delgadillo has been outstanding on the hill for the Doubledays.
One of the lone bright spots in the starting rotation, Delgadillo is currently 2-0 and third in the NY-P league with a 0.60 ERA in 15 innings of work.
The San Antonio native is second in the league in WHIP (0.60) and has 10 strikeouts as opposed to only three walks.
The Doubledays have won all of Delgadillo's three starts.
Tigers, ValleyCats go 18 innings
A Doubledays' record was challenged Friday night. A game between the Oneonta Tigers and the Tri-City ValleyCats lasted 18 innings, with the Tigers scoring once in the top of the 18th to claim a 2-1 victory.
Last season, Auburn defeated Batavia 6-5 in a 22-inning game, the longest in NY-P league history. In fact, the game was so long it had to be suspended after 21 innings and did not resume until over a month later.
Like the Doubledays game against the Muckdogs, the Oneonta and Tri-City hitters posted goose eggs for most of the extra innings. The Tigers and ValleyCats went scoreless for 13 straight innings while the Doubledays and Muckdogs didn't score for 10 straight innings last year.
Coming up
This weekend Auburn gets its first taste of out-of-division foes. The Lowell Spinners kick off a three-game homestand and will be in town until Sunday. The Doubledays lost two-of-three at Lowell last season.
On July 12, Auburn begins a six-game road trip with stops in Aberdeen and Hudson Valley.
The Doubledays won't return home until July 18 when it will host Tri-City.
It is not certain whether Port Byron native Aaron Bulkley will be in uniform for that series.
Bulkley, who is hitting .143 in four games for the ValleyCats, is currently on the disabled list.
