Two Cents

Not all book lovers are nice people; my annual enjoyment of the Book Bonanza was ruined by the lady who took the treasured book I uncovered as I set it down to open it up. Nothing like charity at a charitable event!
The Cayuga County Fair was nice, but I was so disappointed and disgusted that for half of the games, the prizes were either Playboy bunny items or of a pornographic nature. It's not fun to play a game you really like only to have to choose between little kid stuff and pictures of almost naked women as your prize.

Hooray for the Merry Go Round Playhouse allowing a “Alex's Lemonade Stand” for children's cancer research.

" Getting beyond the polarized debate over Indian operations, Auburn and Cayuga County should focus on building and rebuilding with what we already have and decide on what to make. Then, just do it and make it happen ...! "

" Nevada has the 3rd highest suicide rate in the country (could not find city-by-city stats) -- after Wyoming and Montana (must be the lonliness out there). Guess which state has the lowest suicide rate? New York. The rate for the whole US is 10.8 per 100,000 deaths; Nevada's rate is 19.4. Also, "One study (Phillips, Welty, & Smith, 1997) found Las Vegas to have the highest rate of suicide among both visitors and residents compared with other metropolitan centers. Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Reno, Nevada, also exhibited high suicide rates. Furthermore, in Atlantic City, suicide rates increased after the introduction of legalized casinos." Think about movies like "Leaving Las Vegas" -- the inspiration came from somewhere. But really, aside from proving that the suicide issue is not ridiculous at all, as "Sue" would have us believe, but the more critical stuff is the crime which comes with legalised gambling and the cost of that crime to all of us who live here, as well as making Auburn a supplier of the thing addicts crave, like being a drug dealer at the municiple level. How about some common sense here? "

" Did you see that Atlantic City closed just recently because the elected officials couldn't balance the state budget on time? Each day it was closed it lost revenue. Las Vegas is a tourist hub fueled by the fantasy of riches, lust, and sparkle. It is as popular and successful as it is because of false promises and snazzy marketing campaigns. It took years to build it up to where it is now. A casino is not a quick fix, nor is it the right fit for Auburn or Cayuga County. "

" Yes -- Suicide. Actually, I believe Las Vegas does have one of the highest suicide rates. (See Nevada Sun article: http://www.lasvegassun.com/sunbin/stories/text/1999/may/29/508861865.html) And they certainly have a lot of crime. I've met George Fearon a couple times and he is an honest, decent politician who really cares about his consituents, which is more than one can say about a lot of politicians. "

Sue wrote on Jul 11, 2006 11:14 AM:

" What is wrong with Cayuga County ? Legislature Chairman George Fearon thinks a Casino will would trigger a stream of negative social costs, such as higher crime, divorce and suicide rates. SUICIDE !!! Does Las Vegas have finanacial problems or how about Atlantic city are their suicide rates up perhaps replacing George Fearon would bring in extra revenue "
