Idol contestant signs with mogul Davis
Coming in fourth place on “American Idol” isn't so bad.
Chris Daughtry, who was voted off the Fox talent contest's fifth edition in an elimination round, has signed with music mogul Clive Davis in conjunction with 19 Recordings Unlimited, the label managed by “Idol” creator Simon Fuller, RCA Records announced Monday.
The 26-year-old North Carolina native will form a band “and has already begun to work with A-list collaborators” to write and record material for an album, expected to be released later this year, the record label said.
Daughtry turned down an offer to be lead singer for the band Fuel last month. His raspy vocals can be heard on the “American Idol: Season Five Encores” compilation CD, which features his popular cover of Bon Jovi's “Wanted Dead or Alive.”
Aesop Rock rapping in a different way
Rapper Aesop Rock isn't writing fables, but he has contributed to a book.
Rock, whose real name is Ian Bavitz, married Allyson Baker of the rock act Parchman Farm and moved to the San Francisco area last year, when artist Jeremy Fish approached him about collaborating on an animation project.
It didn't come together, but the Def Jux recording artist did contribute a CD to a book Fish wrote and illustrated, “The Next Best Thing,” based on children's books of the 1970s.
Fish said the title refers to the creative process.
Jolie will become a ‘Kung Fu Panda'
Angelina Jolie voiced a femme fatale fish in 2004's “Shark Tale.” Now, she'll portray a martial-arts master in the computer-animated comedy “Kung Fu Panda.”
The movie, which will reunite Jolie and Jack Black, her “Shark Tale” co-star, is slated for release in May 2008.
Jolie's high-kicking character, Tigress, helps train Po, a slacker panda voiced by Black, in the art of kung fu, DreamWorks Animation SKG said in a statement Monday.
Po, a waiter in a noodle restaurant, must get into shape when he is revealed to be the “Chosen One” to save ancient China from powerful foes.
“Kung Fu Panda” will also feature the voices of Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, Dustin Hoffman and Ian McShane.
Lachey is all ready to go out on tour
Now that Nick Lachey's new solo album is a hit, he's ready to go on the road.
Lachey, 32, will tour this fall in support of “What's Left of Me,” which debuted at No. 2 on Billboard's album chart in May and has sold more than 500,000 copies, Jive Records announced Monday.
The 26-city tour opens Sept. 20 in Albany, with stops including Washington, Chicago, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, New York, Boston and Indianapolis. The tour will end Oct. 26 in St. Louis.
