Same start, same result.
The Auburn Doubledays struggled in the first inning once again Thursday, this time slipping into a quick 3-0 hole, and eventually falling to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 8-3 at Eastwood Field.
The loss comes a night after the Scrappers loaded the bases and scored in the first inning of a 5-1 Mahoning Valley win.
The difference on this night was errors - the Doubledays committed four of them in the first five innings.
That didn't help starter Brian Bull (1-1), who was pulled in the fourth after allowing six runs - only one earned.
Auburn made a rally of sorts, though, in the fifth.
Trailing 6-0, the Doubledays had only managed one hit in the game when Sean Scobee led off the inning by reaching on an error.
Two batters later Brian Jeroloman singled to right, and Jonathan Diaz followed with a double through the right side of the infield to plate Scobee.
Jeroloman scored on a sacrifice fly by Adam Calderone.
The Scrappers made the runs up in the bottom of the inning, though, putting the Doubledays behind by six again.
Calderone doubled home Diaz in the seventh for the only other Auburn run.
Mahoning Valley reliever Matt Meyer entered the game in the eighth and retired all six batters he faced in order to close out the game.
Diaz was the only Doubleday to have multiple hits.
