Helen Fromel was inspired by the American flags adorning the main drag through Elbridge on Memorial Day and wondered why her town couldn't do the same.
She approached the town supervisor with the idea, and the town board later agreed to purchase the flags and poles.
Today 40 U.S. flags are flying on utility poles along Route 38A.
Fromel's patriotism and sense of community pride spurred her to do more than most people would: Instead of questioning why her town had no large display of flags, she did something about it.
The flags will be stored for use on future patriotic holidays.
MISS: Recent late-night assaults have sent two men to Auburn Memorial Hospital with head wounds.
At 4:43 a.m. Saturday, Auburn police were called to Denny's restaurant, where a group of men were reported to be fighting in the parking lot.
One man was hit on the head with a beer keg tap and another was arrested on a felony assault charge.
And at 2:22 a.m. Monday, a man suffered a severe cut when he was hit with a beer bottle at Spirit's Tavern. The assailant in that incident drove away before police could find him.
HIT: The grand opening for a disc golf course at Emerson Park in Owasco is set for Saturday.
The game is a little bit like golf, but instead of trying to hit a ball into a hole, players throw Frisbees or other brands of plastic discs into elevated baskets.
The course's first nine holes have been in use since June, and plans are under way to expand the course to 18 holes.
Disc golf is a great way for people to exercise outdoors, and the course has very little impact on the beauty of the park and will require very little maintenance.
The course is free to play and is available seven days a week.
