Seymour Library hosts reading party
Seymour Library will host a summer reading kick-off party from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, July 6. Magician Aaron Isaacs will entertain from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and Abner Doubleday will visit. The party will feature games and crafts, and children can get a schedule of summer activities and a reading log. The event is free. No pre-registration is required.
The library will sponsor activities for children every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in July, beginning July 11.

Scholars honored at Syracuse University
Tyrone Saunders, of Auburn, was one recipient of the Our Time Has Come award. Saunders, a junior majoring in aerospace engineering in the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science, received the Undergraduate Black/Hispanic in Engineering Scholarship and Corning Scholarship.
The scholarship campaign was established in 1987 to encourage Syracuse University alumni to provide financial assistance to African American and Latino students. The campaign funds 16 scholarships. The name of the campaign comes from a speech delivered by Rev. Jesse Jackson in 1984 when he was running for president. Thus far, 679 scholarships worth approximately $1.45 million have been given out to Syracuse University students. More than $4.3 million has been raised to support this program.
Ithaca College offers summer program
A one-week minicourse in writing college application essays will be one of the offerings available through Ithaca Colleges' Summer College for high school students beginning June 25. Others classes will run from July 2 to 7. Taught by assistant professor of writing Jason Ockert, the course will help students develop strategies for writing informative and persuasive college application essays.

Venice Center student wins award
Tiffany Lyn Green, daughter of Todd and Virginia Green of Venice Center and a student at Southern Cayuga High School, was named the Saint Michael's College Scholarship and service award winner. The award recognizes students who demonstrate a commitment to volunteerism and leadership through community service.
American Girl program at library
Seymour Library will offer an American Girl Club program on Tuesday afternoons in July. The program looks at the lives of children in days gone by and is based on the popular series of historical dolls and books. The July programs will feature the characters Kristen, a pioneer girl growing up in Minnesota in 1854.
The club will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoons, beginning July 11. The program is designed for children 6 and up. Registration is required and early registration is recommended because the program fills up quickly. Children need to be able to attend at least two of the three programs to have a space held for them.
