LOCKE - Heather DeGraw didn't want to spend such a beautiful evening in the house with her two young god-children.

“We just wanted to get out and have some fun,” the Groton resident said while the two children, Lucas Park, 4, and Hope Comfort, 3, rode rides at the Locke Firefighters annual field days opening night Wednesday evening.
Young Lucas loved the caterpillar ride so much that he demonstrated not only how the ride went up and down as it spun in circles, but he recreated the sound of the ride as well.
“It goes vroom bang boom,” he exclaimed excitedly while flailing his arms and jumping up and down. “I like how it goes up and down.”
Hope wasn't quite so excited about the ride, and DeGraw suspected that it was because she was sitting in the ride so that she spun backward.
But the annual field days are not just about carnival rides and fair food.
As with many small communities throughout the region, the field days in Locke are the biggest fundraiser of the year for the fire department, according to its president, Renee O'Donnell.
“We will be using the money to finish the buildings,” she said. “We will be putting in new bathrooms and finishing the banquet hall.”
O'Donnell said that the carnival started years ago with only tents but has since been moved into the buildings that were placed on the land.
Firefighters in Locke strive to not only protect the residents they serve, but also reach out by offering family activities.
“The fire department owns this land,” she explained. “We would like to make it a community place for different events throughout the year.”
The fun continues today with traditional carnival foods, rides, games and music from local band New Bach Fly. Another highlight will be the grand parade at 6 p.m.
Performances earlier this week included Donna & The Mystics and Jambones, and a fireworks display was set for Friday night.
Novelty items can be purchased from Arizona Traders throughout the weekend.
“We want everyone to come on out and have a good time,” said Locke firefighter Kevin Church.
