AUBURN - Two men admitted in Cayuga County Court Thursday to a 10-day car theft spree.
Kenneth Armstrong, 23, of 1272 Tollgate Hill Road, Moravia, and Aaron Manning, 21, a Syracuse transient, stole 11 cars between Feb. 15 and Feb. 23 in the Cayuga County towns of Genoa, Locke, Moravia, Sempronius and Summerhill.
Both men were driving stolen cars when they crashed on Route 90 in the Cortland County town of Homer Feb. 23. They were clocked driving at 80 mph on Route 90 in the town of Summerhill by a New York State Police patrol out of the Auburn station.
Armstrong lost control of a 2000 Buick and crashed into a guardrail. Manning began speeding south on Route 90 toward the village of Homer in a Chevrolet Blazer. It was found parked by state troopers from the Homer station at Kinney Gulf Road and Route 90 before Manning sped off again.
Manning had to be extricated from the Blazer when it overturned in a ditch on the east side of Route 90.
They were involved in so many car thefts and burglaries that they couldn't recall Thursday all of the details of their crimes. They
satisfied the legal requirement to explain their guilt. They told Judge Peter Corning that they had discussed all of the charges with their attorneys and had admitted to them.
“There were a number of these cases in this county (Cortland) and Cayuga County,” said Armstrong's assigned counsel, Kevin Taylor.
Armstrong pleaded guilty to nine felonies, including a class D felony of third-degree burglary reduced from a class C felony of second-degree burglary.
Armstrong admitted to burglarizing three residences, including stealing golf clubs from his uncle's residence; stealing a Dodge Durango in Locke Feb. 17; a Chevrolet Cavalier in Summerhill Feb. 17; a GMC Jimmy in Locke Feb. 18; a Honda Accord in Genoa Feb. 21; a Ford Ranger in Locke Feb. 21; a Ford Ranger in Moravia Feb. 23; and possessing a stolen Chevrolet Lumina in Sempronius Feb. 23.
Manning pleaded guilty to seven felonies, including a class D felony of third-degree burglary reduced from a class C felony of second-degree burglary.
Manning admitted to burglarizing three residences, stealing a Chevrolet Cavalier in Locke Feb. 15; a Chevrolet Silverado in Sempronius Feb. 17; a Ford F-250 in Locke Feb. 21; and possessing a stolen Chevrolet Lumina in Sempronius Feb. 23.
Both already pleaded guilty in Cortland County Court to the felony of third-degree attempted criminal possession of stolen property. Armstrong will be sentenced in that court June 20 and Manning will be sentenced June 27.
They will be sentenced July 23 in Cayuga County to an agreed-upon term of 2 1/3 to seven years.
